In January every year, Old Dhaka explodes with colour, vibrancy, and activity during Shakrain, Dhaka’s famous kite festival. Traditionally, families and neighbours come together on rooftops with bamboo poles, string, and paper kites. Shakrain isn’t just about flying kites; it’s about bringing together the community, showcasing your skills, and having fun. Fireworks and rooftop lighting finish off the night, leaving behind a beautiful skyline that makes Dhaka stand out.

The Rise of Digital Celebration
Recently, Shakrain has changed in a way that hasn’t happened in the past. Now there are many people crowded onto rooftops taking part in the festival by not just flying kites but also capturing and sharing their experiences through social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube Shorts, which has made the celebration more than an event; it has become part of a worldwide virality campaign linking Old Dhaka’s culture with people globally.

Tradition Meets Modernity
As much as the digitisation of Shakrain has gained the festival worldwide interest, it has also created questions about the authenticity of Shakrain. The demand for “Instagrammable” photos and experiences can sometimes detract from the festival’s community feel. However, this digital evolution gives younger generations the opportunity to connect with Shakrain tradition in a manner that fits their life-like digital lifestyles; thus ensuring Shakrain continues to be a relevant and exciting celebration.

The Essence Remains
Though changed, the spirit of Shakrain remains, with kite-flying being the impetus for joining with friends, as well as fireworks at night. Shakrain has created an avenue for people today to experience what was done in the past through their participation in local competitions and sharing of their experiences on TikTok and other social media.
