Over the past week, escalating conflict in the Middle East triggered widespread airspace closures and the cancellation of hundreds of international flights, leaving tens of thousands of travellers stranded far from home — in transit hubs like Bangkok and Phuket

In response, the Thai Immigration Bureau has introduced emergency relief measures designed to help foreign nationals remain legally in Thailand without mounting penalties or legal hassles while they wait for flights to resume.

Why These Measures Exist

Once international flight routes through the Middle East shut down on 28 February 2026, many travellers were unable to depart before their visas expired. Standard Thai overstay fines — 500 baht per day — could quickly escalate for people waiting on new flight itineraries. To prevent financial distress and legal complications, authorities declared a special temporary policy.

Waiver of Overstay Fines for Departing Travellers

If your visa expired on or after 28 February 2026 and you are currently at the airport ready to depart Thailand, you will not be charged overstay fines — even if your permission to stay has technically lapsed. This waiver applies only if you intend to leave the country as soon as possible.

This action helps travellers avoid a potentially heavy financial penalty for a situation outside their control.

How to Apply for a Temporary Stay Extension

If your flights are still disrupted and you cannot leave, Thailand allows you to apply for a temporary stay extension of up to 30 days at a time.

Documents You’ll Need

  • Completed TM.7 application form
  • Passport and travel document photocopies
  • A letter from your embassy explaining why you cannot depart

If you cannot obtain an embassy letter due to the crisis, immigration officers will accept an official “statement of necessity” instead.

Before processing the extension, you must first settle any overstay fines accrued prior to these relief measures.

Where to Apply

You can apply for an extension or relief at any Thai Immigration Office, especially:

  • Suvarnabhumi Airport Immigration
  • Don Mueang Immigration Office
  • Phuket Immigration Office
  • Chang Watthana Immigration Office (Bangkok)

Make sure you go before your current permission expires, if possible, with proof of your cancelled or rerouted flight booking.

Tips for Travellers Stuck Longer Than Expected

  • Keep flight cancellation notices or rebooking confirmations — immigration may ask for evidence of disruption.
  • Stay in contact with your embassy or consulate; they can assist with the required letters.
  • Visit immigration early in the day to avoid long lines and processing delays at peak hours.

2. How long can I stay legally if I cannot leave?
You can apply for up to 30 days of temporary stay per extension.
