Fasting is a spiritual practice for Muslims during Ramadan. However, due to long periods without food or drink (especially in gruelling southwestern heat), dehydration can occur.

By following smart hydration and food consumption habits while you are not fasting, you will have energy during this holy month and remain healthy.

Dehydration Signs

Common signs of dehydration During Ramadan Fasting include dizziness, dry mouth, headache, fatigue, and dark urine.

Drink Water on a Schedule During Ramadan Fasting

Instead of drinking lots of water at once, drink smaller amounts throughout non-fasting hours. It has been recommended by experts to stick to a simple pattern such as: drinking water at suhoor, between maghrib and isha’ prayers, and iftar times.

By spreading out the amount of fluid consumed over the fasting day, your body will be better able to absorb the fluid and remain hydrated longer.

Choose Hydrating Foods

Diet plays a significant role in preventing dehydration. Foods with high-water content, such as fruits and vegetables, can help to naturally replenish fluids. For example, foods like yoghurt, oranges, cucumbers and watermelon.

Soups and clear liquids can help replenish your body’s electrolytes and fluids at iftar. Avoiding foods with excessive salt or fried foods will help to prevent you from feeling thirsty the next day.

Reduce Sugary and Caffeinated Beverages

Caffeinated drinks, for instance, tea, coffee and energy drinks, can increase urination, which can lead to fluid loss. Similarly, sugary beverages can provide some energy but will ultimately leave you feeling more thirsty than before.
