The sequel to the famous zombie franchise, called 28 Years Later – The Bone Temple, is taking the series further into disturbing territory. Directed by Nia DaCosta, written by Alex Garland, the sequel picks up immediately after 28 Days Later. The focus is still on survival horror but switches to a more psychological type of terror.
Plot: Cults Replace Chaos
This film is about a violent cult called the “Fingers”, led by Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal, portrayed by Jack O’Connell. In contrast to previous films, which have dealt with chaotic acts of rage, this film takes a more structured approach to brutality/violence that stems from belief and authority.
A disturbing representation of this new world is the “Bone Temple”, a structure made out of human bones. Also, Dr Ian Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) gains an unexpected affinity for an evolved-infected person who may represent a less-than-mindless monster.
Cast and Characters
The film is presented by a strong cast:
- Ralph Fiennes as Dr Ian Kelson
- Jack O’Connell as Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal
- Alfie Williams as Spike
- Erin Kellyman in a supporting role
- Chi Lewis-Parry as Samson
- Cillian Murphy (rumoured return)
What to Expect: Psychological Horror Takes Over
The follow-up to “The Bone Temple” will continue with the earlier plot and focus on human terror at the expense of zombies. These films feature a more intense visual and will focus on cults, violence, and moral ambiguity.
The infected will have evolved by the time the movie appears in theatres, so there is a hint that the main story of the infected has changed from previous films. Instead of getting scared because of being infected, the real fear will come not from being infected but from the cruelty humans have for each other.
