The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecasted rain and thunderstorm activity in many divisions of Bangladesh, as instability in the weather system caused by a strong seasonal flow pattern continues for several days. The BMD has stated that rainfall activity will gradually increase during the next few days, primarily in the central, south-east and south-west regions of Bangladesh.

With the weather system activity increasing, there will be various types of precipitation (light to moderate) with occasional heavy rain and thunderstorms and gusty winds. These weather systems will have an impact on everyday activities, agriculture and travel across multiple divisions of Bangladesh.

Summary of the weather outlook for the day

Many divisions of Bangladesh (including Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram & Sylhet) are forecasted to receive significant amounts of precipitation (rain and thunder). Again, most of these divisions will receive moderate to heavy precipitation (specifically near or in coastal or hilly areas) but any area that receives precipitation may receive a heavy amount of precipitation.

Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka & Rajshahi are also forecasted to receive several hundred millimeters of precipitation today; this includes a significant number of areas will experience limited amounts of precipitation (e.g., no precipitation). Thus, northern divisions may expect slightly more substantial rain today compared to central and southern divisions.

Overall, the weather systems impacting Bangladesh will keep the majority of the country covered (with rain) throughout the course of the day. Winds from the rain will also be experience at all times across Bangladesh.

Tomorrow’s Forecast: Continued Rainfall Activity

Over the next 24 hours, the weather pattern is expected to remain the same with continued rainfall through most divisions: There will be several areas of active rainfall; they will include the Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, Sylhet, Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Dhaka Divisions. The Rajshahi Division may see some isolated or scattered showers. There will be some increased risk for stronger thunderstorms and periods of gusty wind across coastal and hilly regions. The monsoon-like pattern is gradually establishing but has not yet reached its full strength. The weather pattern for the week will see an increase in the amount and variability of precipitation.

Early to Mid-Week: There will be communal rainfall throughout southwest (Khulna–Barishal) and southeast (Chattogram–Sylhet) divisions. There will be occasional communal showers in Dhaka, Rangpur, and Mymensingh divisions, with mostly to partly cloudy skies (with some intermittent sunshine).

Late Week: Rainfall is expected to be distributed across a larger area with increased chances of thunderstorms especially in the central and north-eastern divisions. The potential exists for some localized, heavier rains. All of these observations demonstrate a trend towards progressively more active weather across the nation.

What This Means for Residents

Weather experts forecast that the continued presence of rain and thunderstorms will provide both relief and challenges to several places over the next few weeks.

Potential for Relief:

Able to provide relief by lowering some of the high temperatures from this summer.

Potential Travel Disruption:

Due to wet roads and decreased visibility throughout travel routes.

Potentially Positive Effects on Agriculture:

Could aid in the production of crops; however, too much rain may cause flooding in low-lying fields.

Urban Flooding:

Urban cities like Dhaka may have flooding occur due to heavy rain; please note this will only be a temporary situation.

Residents of Dhaka should continue to monitor all updates from your local meteorological office and/or police department to stay safe during thunderstorms, primarily if you live near or utilize elevated areas and coastal borders.

Final Thoughts

Multiple regions of Bangladesh can expect wet weather to last for several days; thus, the temperature patterns will result in the potential for over one week of wetter-than-average weather patterns. There are several opportunities for seasonally cooler temperatures; however, the risk for storms and excess quantities of rain should be factored in when making event plans.

Residents are advised to monitor local or official weather forecasts provided through the Ministry of Meteorology for systematic real-time updates, as weather varies too often.
