There has been quite a long wait for Bogura Airport’s future address; however, it now looks like it will finally get a long-overdue facelift after years of delays, changing timelines, and promises of “soon”. But before we get too excited, we will not see commercial flights start until probably the end of 2026.

The reopening of Bogura Airport may change how we travel in northern Bangladesh and northern India, as it may create new demand (and/or different types of) travel to/from both countries.

Reopening Status: Proceeding Slowly

At present, Bogura Airport is a Bangladesh Air Force base with only the occasional use as a public airport under Special Authority. Improvements to allow for commercial use (e.g. runway renovations and terminal updates) are still in progress.

In November 2022, the Civil Aviation Authority advised that they plan to open Bogura Airport between mid- and late-2026. As with most aviation projects, the last hurdle to opening the airport will likely take longer than anticipated, and therefore, there will not be a firm opening date.

However, Bogura is now classified as a priority airport project for increasing connections between northern Bangladesh and the rest of the world!

Expected Flight Routes: Domestic First, Expansion Later

As operations commence, the priority will be within the country rather than on international routes.

Phase One will likely focus on connecting the following major corridors:

1) Dhaka – Bogura

This route may carry the greatest amount of passenger traffic and will drastically cut down travel time between the capital and the north and northwest districts of the country.

2) Bogura – Rajshahi

Feeder routes will provide connections to smaller regional points of an overall enhanced, efficient network.

3) Boost for Tourism and Local Economy

Plans at this time; however, there is ongoing discussion of connecting Bogura with international cities, including Kolkata or Guwahati, as soon as runways are built out and given the proper regulatory approvals, etc. These international routes do not have set timelines or deadlines at this time.

A Shift in North Bengal Travel Patterns

While reopening the Bogura Airport facilitates air travel, it also changes the way people will travel throughout northern Bangladesh.

1. The airport will provide quicker access to northern Bangladesh

Current options for travelling from Dhaka to the northern parts of Bangladesh involve extensive road and/or rail trips that typically require 6-8 or more hours to complete. By using air travel through the Bogura Airport, travellers will:

  • Travel to the Bogura Airport in under 60 minutes and then
  • Use road transportation to complete the remainder of the journey in approximately 2-3 hours.

The reduction in travel time provides for significantly greater accessibility to and throughout northern Bangladesh.

2. Provides travellers with new opportunities for cross-border travel throughout the region

For travellers from North Bengal, India, such as Siliguri and Malda, the Bogura Airport saves time and provides an alternative entry point into Bangladesh, as opposed to relying on Kolkata as the only gateway. The Bogura Airport allows travellers to combine rail travel and air travel to provide them with hybrid transportation routes to northern Bangladesh that allow for:

  • Rail travel to northern Bangladesh transportation hubs and then
  • Short domestic flights to their final destination within Bangladesh.

This combination of travelling by air and rail as two legs of their journey provides for greater flexibility and reduced fatigue.

3. Increased tourism and benefits to the local economies of northern Bangladesh

Increased access to and through northern Bangladesh will result in an increase in the amount of tourism to the area. For example, more people will travel to Mahasthangarh, one of South Asia’s oldest archaeological sites. Additional travel opportunities will occur as a result of:

  • More people are travelling on weekends.
  • Increased activities within the local hospitality industry.
  • Creation of cross-border tourism circuits between India and Bangladesh.

Increased business opportunities will also result due to the Bogura Airport improving access to and through northern Bangladesh.

What to Expect in the Initial Phase

When the new airport opens in Bogura, Bangladesh, it will take some time before full service operations can be established. Here are some of the reasons to keep your travel plans realistic in Bogura during the first few months after opening:

  • Limited Number of Flights: There will likely be a limited number of flights that are available.
  • Small Aircraft: Smaller aircraft, such as propeller and narrow-body jets, will be used rather than large aircraft.
  • Airline Participation: In addition to the local carrier, Biman Bangladesh Airlines, there will also be at least one carrier from outside of Bangladesh – US Bangla Airlines.
  • Airline Routes Will Take More Time to Become Available: Good international routes may take longer to identify than domestic routes.

During the first few months of operation, there will be a normal phased approach for newly opened regional airports.

Impact of Bogura International Airport on Kolkata Travellers

The biggest advantage for Kolkata travellers is strategic in nature rather than immediate.

Presently, the most common method of travel between Bangladesh and Kolkata is as follows:

  • Travel from Kolkata to Dhaka via air
  • Followed by a lengthy overland journey.

Once Bogura is operational, Kolkata travellers will have an alternative option: To travel to ND via train or by road, and thereafter connecting to short-haul flights. This option has the potential over time to save visitors much time and to open up new, longer-haul travel possibilities.

Final Takeaway

Bogura Airport reopening won’t instantly transform the regional connection; however, it is a milestone in Changing Reginal connectivity.

The expected improvements to Bogura Airport by the end of 2026 are:

  • A major hub for air travel to and from Northern Bangladesh.
  • Reduced travel times to other cities within Bangladesh.
  • Providing opportunities for cross-border flights into and out of India.

The reopening of Bogura Airport is more than just a reopening of an airport for citizens of Northern Bengal; it will connect them to an entirely new and more flexible multi-modal travel system.
