Japan Visit: Tarique Rahman's Economic Plan

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is in Japan for a four-day visit that began on October 26. The trip could change how the two countries work together.

Until now, Japan has given aid and built infrastructure in Bangladesh. This visit points toward investment, factories and technology.

The Trade Deal at the Centre

The big purpose is the Economic Partnership Agreement signed in February. It gives about 97 per cent of Bangladesh’s exports duty-free access to Japan. Now Dhaka has to help exporters actually use it.

The $14 Billion Proposal of Bangladesh Towards Japan

Bangladesh is also asking for about $14 billion in investment across 12 sectors, including energy, pharmaceuticals, IT and manufacturing. Japan is reportedly ready to facilitate around $6.35 billion in private investment over five years.

Matarbari and the Bay of Bengal Purpose

The Matarbari deep-sea port is another key piece. Japan sees it as the anchor of a wider industrial belt linking northeastern India, Bangladesh and Southeast Asia.

Jobs for Young Workers and Entrepreneurs

Jobs matter too. The two countries plan to send at least 100,000 Bangladeshi workers to Japan over five years. Language and skills training will decide how good those jobs are.

What Success Looks Like For Bangladesh

The real test is simple: will the visit bring signed commitments, new factories and faster approvals?

If it does, Bangladesh could move beyond garments and remittances toward a stronger, more varied economy.
