After nearly nine months of silence, St Martin’s Island is ready for visitors. The government announced on October 25 that tourists can travel to the coral island from November 1.
The decision followed an inter-ministerial meeting chaired by Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo on October 12. The island sits in the Bay of Bengal off Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar and has been closed to tourists since February 1.
A Longer Season and a Higher Cap
The biggest change is the length of the season. Last year, tourists could visit only from November to January. This time the island stays open until March 15, 2027.
The daily visitor limit has also gone up from 2,000 to 3,500, which means 1,500 more people can visit each day. Hotel owners, boat operators and local shopkeepers, who lost months of income during the closure, will welcome the change.
What Travellers Need to Know and Will Pay
Every visitor must now pay an environmental conservation fee of Tk 100. The Department of Environment will collect it under the Ecologically Critical Area Management Rules, 2016. The money is meant to support the protection of the island’s fragile coral and marine life.
How to Get To Bangladesh Only Coral Island
Approved tourist ships will keep running from Nuniachhara Ghat in Cox’s Bazar. The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority and the Department of Shipping cannot clear any vessel for the route without approval from the environment ministry. Travellers should book only with approved operators.
Overnight Stays and Rules to Check at St Martin’s
Several reports say the ban on overnight stays has been lifted, which was a major complaint last season when November visitors could only make day trips.
However, the official letter says earlier directives from October 2025 remain in force. Visitors should confirm stay rules with their hotel or tour operator before travelling.
Protecting the Coral Reef While Welcoming Global Tourists
St Martin’s is a delicate place for the marine ecosystem. Littering, loud music and damage to coral have worried environmentalists for years. A higher cap makes responsible behaviour even more important, so carry your waste back, avoid touching the coral and respect local rules.
The reopening is good news for tourism in Cox’s Bazar. The real test will be whether the island can handle more visitors without losing what makes it special.
