Bangladesh Bank’s official website has stayed inaccessible for a third consecutive day. The central bank says banking operations are running normally.
Website Down Since Thursday
The central bank took its site offline on Thursday, October 22, after receiving a global cybersecurity alert. Visitors to bb.org.bd now see a maintenance notice saying the service will be back shortly. Bangladesh Bank spokesperson and Executive Director Arief Hossain Khan said central banks worldwide are being targeted by hackers. He said the site was therefore taken down to protect it from cyberattacks.
Why The Alert Matters
The move came as the government’s Computer Incident Response Team (BGD e-GOV CIRT) issued a high-level alert over two critical vulnerabilities in PHP, a widely used website programming language. Government websites in several European countries have also gone offline as a precaution. Local reports say the vulnerabilities were identified by the security firms Calif and Wiz using artificial intelligence. It was not immediately clear whether Bangladesh Bank’s decision was directly linked to the PHP flaws.
Banking Services Unaffected
The central bank says its connection with commercial banks is running smoothly. Internet and mobile banking transactions are working normally, and customers face no problems. The shutdown came during a five-day public holiday.
Other Regulators Stay Online
Other financial bodies have kept their websites running, including the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission, the Dhaka Stock Exchange and the Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority. No major cyberattack has been reported in Bangladesh in connection with the vulnerabilities.
No Restoration Date Yet
The bank’s IT department is reviewing the site’s security and strengthening its defences. Khan said the website will not return until security is fully ensured. No timeline has been given. Customers should rely on their banks’ own channels for now, as the central bank’s online resources remain unavailable.
