Najmul Hossain Shanto announced his decision of stepping down as the captain of the test format after the 1-0 defeat against Sri Lanka. Bangladesh lost the test with an innings and 78 runs difference and Shanto revealed it in the press conference after the match.
“I don’t want to continue [as captain] in the Test format anymore. This is not personal. I have taken the decision for the betterment of the team,” Shanto said “I think this will help the team. I have been a part of the dressing room for the past few years.
Shanto also added that having three different captains for three formats is not working, “I think three captains [for the three international formats] is not sensible. I don’t know what the board will feel about this, and I will support their decision. But this is my personal decision. I think three separate captains will be difficult for the team to deal with.”
“I would want that no one feels this decision is emotional, or that I am disappointed by something. I want to make this clear. This is for the betterment of the team”. Shanto also said that he had informed the Bangladesh Cricket Board about his decision a few days back.
Najmul Hossain Shanto’s decision to step down from test captaincy comes only a month after he was replaced by Mehidy Hasan Miraz as the ODI captain. Litton Das is the current skipper of Bangladesh in T20I format.
He captained the Bangladesh side in 14 Test matches of which 4 wins were recorded, yet nine losses. He has been good with his bat, recording 36.24 average while being a captain, an increase from 29.83 average when he was not the skipper.
