Satyajit Ray’s Ancestral Home demolished in Bangladesh! Only a month after Tagore’s House destroyed by Mob

The ancestral house of famous artist and filmmaker Satyajit Ray was destroyed on Wednesday to be replaced by a semi-concrete structure in Mymensingh City. The house was formerly used as the Mymensingh Shishu academy had the legacy and paternal roots of filmmaker Satyajit Ray’s great grandfather, Upendra Kishore Ray Chowdhury, an eminent litterateur and his grandfather poet Sukumar Ray. 

The century-old house was located on the Horkishore Ray Chowdhury, the road named after one of Ray’s ancestors who are a lineage with immense contribution to Bangla literature and arts. 

The property after the 1947 partition came under the control of government ownership and was refurbished in 1989. Currently the survey of Bangladesh has stated that the property is an archeological heritage, said Sabina Yeasmin, field officer at the Department of Archaeology, Mymensingh Division. 

দ্য Bangladesh government has initially demolished major figures’ houses and properties in 2025: 

ফেব্রুয়ারি 2025 – Founding father and president of Bangladesh Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s partial house property was demolished. It was the final residence of the late president where around 50 of his family members were murdered. 

June 2025 – The ancestral home of veteran poet Rabindranath Tagore was vandalised and destroyed at Shahzadpur in Sirajganj district. A dispute sprouted from a parking fee issue between a visitor and the museum staff. 

India has lent an offering to help restore and repair the historic building, “Given the building’s landmark status, symbolising Bangla cultural renaissance, it would be preferable to reconsider the demolition and examine options for its repair and reconstruction as a museum of literature and a symbol of the shared culture of India and Bangladesh,” the Ministry of External Affairs said.
