It is not a surprising thing that artificial intelligence is being celebrated for its ability to make life easier and more efficient. From healthcare to transportation, this significant part of modern technology is transforming almost all sectors across the globe.

But artificial intelligence also carries a hidden cost – considerable harm to nature. The most pressing issue is energy consumption. Training large artificial intelligence models requires enormous computing drama – demanding huge amounts of electricity.

There is a possibility that a single artificial intelligence model can consume as much energy as hundreds of homes in a year. Most of this energy is still produced from fossil fuels, releasing greenhouse gases that accelerate climate change.

Extraction of natural resources for artificial intelligence

The extraction of natural resources for artificial intelligence components adds to the problem. Minerals like cobalt, lithium and rare earth metals are essential for producing chips and batteries. Mining these materials causes deforestation.

The mining procedure is also responsible for soil erosion. The modern technology also often speeds up resource exploitation. There is no doubt that automated systems in mining, fishing and agriculture can extract resources at an unsustainable pace.

If these impacts of artificial intelligence on nature remain unchecked, this modern technology can become a much more significant problem. It is important to ensure that artificial intelligence enhances human progress and does not sacrifice nature at the same time.
