On the second day after a humble beginning on its first day, Telugu film Thammudu was found to have reduced its box office showing. The movie that stars Nithiin as the main protagonist was only able to gross 0.44 crore in India on Saturday to make it a total of 2.34 crore in the two days it has been running on screens.
Venu Sriram is the director and Sri Venkateswara Creations has produced the movie. It is being led by Varsha Bollamma, Swasika, Sapthami Gowda and Saurabh Sachdeva in addition to Nithiin. Although the movie had the buzz attached to it, mainly due to star power and the production house, since the first day, the movie has not been able to sustain the opening buzz.
Drop in Collections Raises Concerns
The first day was worth 1.90 crore in India, but the second numbers were very low showing an enormous drop of 77 per cent. The decline particularly on a Saturday when collections are normally assumed to increase indicates that the movie is struggling to attract viewers during the weekend.
Trackers in the film industry cite the weak footfall and reviews as the reasons behind the tract performance. Also, the release calendar was too full of films trying to find an angle alongside the other and this had possibly split the number of audiences, thus giving Thammudu less chance to retain what it had then.
Day 2 Occupancy Paints a Clear Picture
The total occupancy of Thammudu in Telugu speaking states on Saturday was only 13.53 %. A total of 11.44% of the viewers were watching it on morning shows with a slight increase in the afternoon of 15.62% of the viewers. But the evening and night shows did not record any to insignificant data at the period of estimation.
A look at major regions reveals varied responses:
- Hyderabad: 14.5% average occupancy
- Vijayawada: 11.5%
- Vizag: 19.5%
- Warangal: Slightly higher at 29%
- Karimnagar: Surprising outlier with 41% average occupancy
The film had poor audience turn up in other urban centers such as Bengaluru, Chennai, and Mumbai where the occupancy was less than 20 percent in most of the time of the day.
Audience Reception and Competition
Although Thammudu had a marketing campaign that created buzz prior to its release, the movie has not been able to translate the same into longevity as far as ticket sales are concerned. The response has been mixed and criticism, commenting especially on the film pacing and narrative.
The existing competition between movies in the cinemas has contributed to the challenge as well. Heavy releases this weekend that have received more positive word-of-mouth and critical reception have pushed Thammudu to the edge to stay in the reckoning.
Having Sunday as a big day in terms of collections, the team of the film will be optimistic and looking forward to a recovery. But the fact that it declined dramatically between Friday and Saturday is worrying as this potentially can derail the film and cut its theatrical run short.
Thammudu may walk out of most theatres early unless there is some quick rush motivated by a good word-of-mouth or a regional festival support.
The coming days will be crucial for the makers. Any major boost on Sunday can provide an immediate relief but the initial trend shows that the movie is not expected to fulfill its box office prospects.
