দ্য Yunus Government is again accused of targeting intellectuals in Bangladesh as the famous Economist and Professor Abul Barkat was arrested on Thursday night from his residence in Dhanmondi area in Dhaka.
Md Nasirul Islam, the Joint Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch confirmed the arrest as a case was filed against the renowned professor. ABul Barkat was accused of embezzlement of funds worth Tk 297.34 crore in February by Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) under Yunus regime.
Abul Barkat was born as the third child in 1954 in Kushtia District. He has been infamous for his grounded behaviour. He refused the company car for his travels and any additional or special lifts or chairs in the office for himself after his appointment as the Chairman of Janata Bank Limited in 2009.
Abul Barkat Education Background
- SSC (1970): Passed from Kushtia Zilla School with First Division and Distinction.
- HSC (1973): Passed from Kushtia Government College with First Division and Distinction.
- Bachelor’s Degree (1978): Graduated with Honors First Class and highest grades from Moscow Institute of National Economy (now Plekhanov Russian University of Economics).
- Ph.D. (1982): Earned a Ph.D. in Development Economics from the same institute.
Abul Barkat was known for his achievements and thoughts on minority exit from Bangladesh. His notion was expressed through the book ‘Political economy of reforming agriculture-land-water bodies in Bangladesh’ in which he warns that if the rate of exodus of the minority Hindu community continued, then there would not be any Hindus left after 30 years (2046).
