Ashura 2025, will either fall on 6 July 2025 or it might also vary based on the sighting of the moon and this day is considered to be more iconic and a unique one for the Bangladeshi people who follow the beliefs of Islam. The given information states that the Shia communities contemplate it as more important to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain which was dated in 680 CE, during the battle of Karbala. 

Who is Imam Hussain?

Imam Hussain is a socio-political leader and the grandson of Prophet Muhammad. While tracing the history of Ashura it states that he went against Umayyad Caliph Yazid I by turning down the support for him for he is remarked as the unjust ruler by Imam. It sparked the battle of Karbala. The rift reflected during the battle, with help of a small group of loyal followers Imam had to face a massive army who were blocked on their way by the army of Umayyad deliberately. At the he chose the sacrifice over submission. His brave action and oblation during this war is recognised as the symbol of resistance to diminish the oppression through an unwavering faith to position the justice for his people. 

When is Ashura 2025 in Bangladesh?

In 2025, ‘Ashura’ falls on 6th July (Sunday) in Bangladesh. The following are the various practices which are carried out during this festival. 

  • Both the Shia and Sunni Muslims will celebrate Ashura.
  • The people will gather at religious places like mosques for discussions and to foster solidarity.
  • Public processions, chantings and the mourning event that highlights Imam Hussain’s martyrdom will take place.
  • Distribute charity and free food to the people.
