The accusations against Azharul Islam states that he was responsible for the genocide and war crimes during the 1971 Liberation War, and he was found guilty of committing various crimes against 1200 people which includes rape, abduction, & mass murders. On 27 May 2025, Bangladesh’s Supreme Court declared this historical judgement of death sentence which was carried out by the Seven-member bench and led by Chief Justice Dr.Syed Refaat Ahmed. The other members are Justice Md. Ashfaqul Islam, Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, Justice Md. Rezaul Haque, Justice Imdadul Haque, Justice Md. Asaduzzaman, Justice Farah Mahbub.
Was he the first Jamaat Leader to be sentenced to death?
Well, to this question the answer is no. Because the history of Bangladesh has witnessed such bold judgments of the court in the past. With today’s declaration Azharul Islam becomes the sixth Jamaat Leader to be punished.
