The Appellate Division of the Bangladeshi Supreme Court reinstated 988 employees of the National University who had been previously dismissed during the Awami League rule. On Tuesday, the verdict was delivered by a seven member board of justice led by Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed.
The case of query regarding the employment started in 2004, when former MP Advocate Fazle Rabbi Miah filed a writ petition with the High Court on 31 August 2004. Two years later on 22 August 2006, the High Court dismissed the writ after a longstanding hearing.
Then in 2010, a review petition against the verdict by former MP Advocate AKM Mozammel Haque, which led to the dismissal of hundreds of employees for which a reason was given in 2011, stating the termination was done on the basis of orders from the higher court.
After the 2024 ousting of the Awami League Party in August, the terminated members raised their voice demanding reinstatement with the support of the NU authorities, submitting a petition with the court.
Finally the appeals led to an Appellate division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh delivered the verdict that prompted reinstatement of all of the terminated employees.
