Before Eid-ul-Adha, the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) is taking action across the city to dispose of thousands of tons of sacrificial animal waste within a day. The DSCC is aiming to do a quick, clean and hygienic job of disposal since it has several thousand people and advanced machinery at its disposal in all 75 wards.

Md Shahjahan Mia, DSCC Administrator, talked about the huge arrangements being made for the upcoming Eid at a press conference in National Eidgah Maidan on Thursday. The cleanup will begin at 3:00 PM on Eid day, June 7 and will go until 3:00 AM the morning after.

Mega Cleanup Plan to Tackle Sacrificial Animal Waste

10,267 sanitation workers are being used with a strong fleet of machines to collect the waste left by more than 30,000 metric tons of animals.

Equipment and resources involved include:

  • 207 dump trucks
  • 200 mini trucks
  • 44 compactors
  • 39 container carriers
  • 16 pay-loaders
  • 5 tire dozers
  • 9 water trucks
  • 2 bulldozers
  • 4 excavators
  • 3 air compressors (vehicle-mounted)
  • 2 forklifts
  • 3 skid loaders

In addition to supportive equipment, 140,000 biodegradable waste bags, 40 tons of bleaching powder and 222 gallons of disinfectant (Savlon) were given to the different wards by the DSCC. Expecting this process to decrease the impact on nature and stop the spread of diseases.

Administrator Shahjahan Mia emphasized the urgency of the mission. “Cleanliness is crucial for public health, especially during Eid. Speed is important to us, but we also focus on how well things are done, how sanitary they are and how many citizens are involved.

Public Cooperation and Hygiene Guidelines Emphasized

Citizens are encouraged by the city to carefully observe the DSCC’s set of measures. It is necessary for people to use the provided biodegradable bags and toss their waste only where it is allowed by the authorities. Ward-level teams will be in direct contact with the public to make the plan run smoothly. DSCC has issued advice to people not to throw their trash in open drains, roads or close to residential areas. Community leaders and mosque committees are being asked to share information about correct disposal, so that each community stays clean before and after Eid. According to authorities, mobile teams will monitor the area during the set time to ensure every ward is inspected quickly and emergency support is ready if anything unexpected happens.

This program is connected to DSCC’s objective to improve the city’s cleanliness and environmental health as a whole. This massive job of cleaning up after Eid-ul-Adha can show how well the city will perform in emergency operations. Since Dhaka’s population is dense, managing waste during religious holidays used to be tough. Using numerous workers and modern machines helps a lot. Shahjahan Mia stated that the work is both about collecting waste and cleaning and tidying all areas before anyone even notices. If this strategy works, it could be copied in other parts of the country dealing with problems similar to Dhaka during Eid-ul-Adha.
