Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of Bangladesh’s founder and the First President Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is known as the longest serving Prime Minister of Bangladesh. After the murder of her father, mother and three brothers, Sheikh Hasina and her sister were living in exile abroad, later coming to Bangladesh in 1981.
Sheikh Hasina was first elected as the prime minister in 1996 till 2001 and then later a longer time in office from 2009 to 2024. Her time as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, there was a huge tension of corruption, economic crisis, foreign debt and increased inflation and unemployment among the youth.
She was ousted from her position in 2024 after a student- led protest when she fled away from Bangladesh in exile to India. She was accused of orchestrating the mass massacre of students and commotions in Bangladesh and extrajudicial killings. Her political party – The Awami League was discontinued by the following government led by Interim Chief Advisor Muhammed Yunus.
