Kuakata, located in the Patuakhali District in southern Bangladesh, is one of the most inviting travel destinations in the country. Kuakata, also known as ‘Sagar Kannya’ or ‘Daughter of the Sea’ is especially unique for its geographical location. It is one of the few places in South Asia from where one can catch the whole view of the sunrise and sunset, on the same sea level horizon without any obstruction. This rare phenomenon attracted nature lovers, photographers and peace-seekers to Kuakata.
An incredible beach for more than just the view of the coast. At 18 km in length and 3 km in width, Kuakata has so much history and culture to offer. The Kuakata of today is a result of people from the Rakhine settled here after being expelled by the Myanmar government in the late 18th century. They dug wells (kuas) to establish fresh water, for which Kuakata was named.
Where to watch Sunrise and Sunset?
When it comes to sunrise views, people usually venture to the eastern edge of the beach which is just below the Gangamati Reserved Forest. If you arrive just before dawn, you will catch the sun slowly rising over the Bay of Bengal as it paints the waves with golden light. For sunset, choose the western side of the beach, either near Fatrar Char or close to the Tourist Center area. The wide horizon allows views as the sun goes down under the sea.
The region is home to ancient Buddhist temples including Seema Buddhist Vihara and traditional Rakhine village homes where tourists can experience local customs and crafts. Nature lovers will also enjoy excursions to Gangamati Reserved Forest and Fatrar char that boasts an abundance of flora and fauna including its red crabs.
With the recent development of infrastructures such as the Padma Bridge, Kuakata is now far more accessible from Dhaka at around 5 to 7 hours by road. Kuakata is very beautiful and peaceful and offers a blend of natural resources and cultural resources; this mixture makes it a gem found in the tourism profile of Bangladesh.
