Muhammad Yunus was an economist and the founder of the award winning Grameen Bank, an initiative that provides microloans to underprivileged people in return of no collateral. Accusations and Political History
Grameen Bank Controversies – Yunus was removed as the MD of the Grameen Bank in 2011 by the Central Bank citing age of retirement as 60, which was Yunus’ age in 2000. He further challenged the rule, removed by the court. Plethora of legal cases regarding labour law violations, corruption, tax evasion and money laundering among others are pending. He was also sent to six months of jail (bail pending) for failing to set up an employee welfare fund.
Ties with the Clintons – Alleged that Yunus staged a demo project for Hillary Clinton with inflated interest rates and misleading villagers- based on suspect local press reports. Accusations that he leveraged connections with Clinton, Biden, and other Western leaders to elevate status, sway funders, and potentially influence domestic affairs.
