The governments of both পাকিস্তান এবং বাংলাদেশ have signed a landmark agreement to permit holders of diplomatic and official passports to travel visa-free to both countries. The move announced on August 21, 2025, is a remarkable way of restarting bilateral relations, which had deteriorated throughout the decades because of the events of 1971. The five-year deal has been authorized by the interim government in Bangladesh, led by মুহাম্মদ ইউনূস, to deepen political, security, and trade relations between Dhaka and Islamabad.
Agreement Details and Diplomatic Context
The agreement was concluded in a series of meetings between the Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi of Pakistan, and the Home Adviser, Lieutenant General (rtd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury of Bangladesh, last month in Dhaka. Under the new policy, it will allow the holders of diplomatic passports and official passports of the two states to enter visa-free, according to state-run Radio Pakistan, as well as officials from Bangladesh.
Hafiqul Alam, press secretary to Muhammad Yunus, said the agreement lasts five years. Bangladesh already has comparable arrangements with 31 other countries, and officials think that by giving an exemption to Pakistan, they are demonstrating willingness to build a more cooperative future.
During previous discussions, both partners also addressed the need to increase cooperation in the areas of internal security, police training, anti-narcotics, and counter-terrorism. A joint committee, cochaired by Pakistan Interior Secretary Khurram Agha, has been formed to monitor the implementation, and a high-ranking Bangladeshi group will also visit Islamabad to see how the Safe City Project is being implemented and how the National Police Academy is running.
Chowdhury has said the visit of Naqvi was very important to bring the two countries closer in their bilateral cooperation. He also thanked Pakistan for its offer to the Bangladeshi police personnel to train in specialized types of police training and was seen as a major pillar of future security ties.
Improving Relations and Trade Prospects
The resumption of the visa-free process of entry of diplomats is against the environment where there have been better relations since August 2024, which culminated in the uprising in Bangladesh that marked the conclusion of Sheikh Hasina’s government. The interim administration under Muhammad Yunus has expressed a desire to improve bilateral ties with Pakistan and move past the historical distrust that marked the relationship following Bangladesh’s independence in 1971.
The decision is seen as part of a general break-up, and it has been happening as the exchange of high-level contacts increases. On August 21, 2025, Pakistan Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan visited Dhaka on a four-day formal visit to improve trade and economic ties. The visit highlights the possibility of closer interaction beyond being political and security-related, with a strong focus on business, investment, and regional connectivity.
The agreement on the freedom of visa-free entry also complies with the action of intensifying integration in South Asia. In the ongoing efforts to make a big stride forward, both administrations are also looking at possible new formulas of working collectively in the areas of trade, security, and cultural exchange, which observers feel may help to lessen tensions that have existed since time immemorial.
With Pakistan and Bangladesh entering a new era of interaction, recent events have pointed to the burgeoning realisation that cooperation, as opposed to confrontation, is in the mutual interests of an increasingly complex region.
