Citizens have to pay about Tk 122 for each liter of gasoline in Bangladesh. The price of gas ($108 per liter) together with octane ($129.7) and diesel ($108) may fluctuate from time to time. Because of the new rules enacted by the government in February 2024, fuel prices are changed every month on their own. The system is put in place to link the price of fuel in the country to what is happening in the world market. Giving more control to the market instead of the government is a big shift for people in the economy. The International Monetary Fund and some organizations asked the government to bring in the automatic fuel price system. Prices of fuel in the country have fluctuated over the years and sometimes by a lot, which caused the market to respond strongly. It will ensure that oil prices are steady by calculating new rates every month with data from international crude oil, exchange rates, custom duties, and costs at the BPC.

Impact and Reactions to the New System

Even though the idea is to shed light on spending and ease budget constraints by eliminating subsidies, many have different views on how it is being carried out. Advocates state that it promotes an economy oriented towards the market and ensures that the budgets of places like BPC are sustainable. They also stress that making changes once a month can assist in managing the company’s losses whenever global electricity is priced high, and also encourage price reductions when rates decrease globally.

Yet, some economists and consumer right organizations are worried because they are not sure how completely transparent the calculation is. They state that some parts of the pricing model, for example BPC’s profit margin, could be non-realistic and not truly efficient. Another concern is that inflation may increase as a result, mainly for products that count on fuel for transportation and production. Since diesel is heavily used for irrigation and transportation in these sectors, a price raise puts them in great risk.

Reasoning behind their pricing method changes regularly to make sure the global condition does not outweigh domestic stability. The body’s future achievements depend on how closely it understands market trends and works to defend vulnerable people in society.
