Football used to be the most beloved and followed sport in the 70s and 80s in বাংলাদেশ as the team even won a gold medal at the South Asian Games in 1999. Bangladesh is also the second team from Asia to qualify for the AFC Asian Cup in 1980. Until the early 2000s, the game of football was given prominent attention with the national side winning gold at the 2003 SAFF Gold Cup.
Gradually the sport of Cricket took the attention with the growing interest and fundings for the same along with the exposure from neighbouring countries. The Bangladesh Football Federation and was one of the founding members of the South Asian Football Federation. It has been affiliated with the FIFA from 1976 and has some good performers representing the national side.
