Driving License Renewal Rules

If you’ve been putting off renewing your driving licence because the process seemed too complicated, you’re not alone. The BRTA documents are confusing to many car owners in Bangladesh and when the fee structure changes, it only increases the uncertainty. The good news is that the 2026 renewal process is more streamlined than it used to be, especially now that the smart card system is up and running in most BRTA offices. Here’s a clear look at what you need to know before you walk in.

Who Needs to Renew and When

In Bangladesh, the driving licences are issued for either three or five years depending on the class of vehicle. If it expires then the licence is no longer valid and driving on it is a legal penalty. BRTA suggests starting the renewal process at least 30 days before it is due. Not because it takes that long, but because delays are common at busy district offices, especially in Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet, where queues can add several weeks to the renewal process.

If your licence has already expired, you can renew it, but you’ll pay a late fee on top of the standard renewal charge. So, acting early is always the cheaper option.

Best for: Vehicle owners whose licence is due to expire within 3 months or has already expired.

BRTA Driving Licence Renewal Fees 2026

In 2026 the BRTA revised its fee schedule with different amounts for each category of vehicle. The renewal fee for a non-professional driving licence for private cars and light vehicles is Tk 2,258 for three years and Tk 3,448 for five years. The fees for a commercial vehicle professional licence are a little bit higher at Tk 2,758 for three years and Tk 3,948 for five years. The renewal fee of a motorcycle licence is Tk 1,608 for three years. These figures include the smart card issuance fee which is now part of the renewal cost and not charged separately as in the past.

Best for: Anyone planning out renewal fees before heading to the BRTA office or the online payment portal.

You must bring documents

“The most common reason for applicants to make a second trip is to forget to take a single document on the day. BRTA requires the original expired or expiring licence, a copy of your National ID card, a recent medical fitness certificate from a registered physician confirming eyesight and physical fitness, one copy of a recent passport size photograph with a white background and the bank deposit slip or mobile banking receipt confirming payment of the renewal fee.

Commercial drivers, or those who hold professional licences, must also produce a current fitness certificate for the class of vehicle they are licensed to drive.

Best for: First-time renewals who want to avoid the frustration of an incomplete application.

Renewing Without Hassle

BRTA registration renewal online is the easiest way in 2026. Simply apply online, upload documents and pay the fee online and visit the office for biometric verification and smart card collection. A practical step-by-step workflow:

•Get medical fitness certificate from registered doctor at least a week before applying

•Log in to the BRTA online portal, fill out the renewal form and upload your documents

•Pay the right fee through Sonali Bank, bKash or Nagad from the payment gateway of the portal

•On the date of your appointment, please visit your assigned BRTA office to have your biometrics captured and collect your smart card

Summary:

BRTA has updated its driving licence renewal process and fee structure for 2026. Whether you drive a motorcycle, private car, or commercial vehicle, knowing the correct fees, documents, and steps beforehand will save you time, money, and unnecessary trips to the BRTA office.
