Bangladesh’s E-Passport network, as an alternative for citizens who want to have an internationally recognised passport, is rapidly becoming the option for those who wish to travel with peace of mind. The E-Passport system stores information about each individual on an electronic microchip within a passport. This allows the E-Passport to be more secure than previous versions of machine-readable passports while enabling faster processing at immigration control points.
Bangladesh has fully switched to using the electronic E-Passport for all immigration applications. The Department of Immigration and Passports now issues a biometric document with an embedded microchip for all new applications and renewals. The entire application process, including the new and renewal processes, has been improved with the introduction of an online registration/appointment system.
Step 1: Submit an Online Application
First, go to the official Department of Immigration and Passport (DIP) E-Passport portal. Create an account and fill out the application form with your personal details according to your present passport or NID.
Applicants will also have to choose the type of E-Passport booklet they want to have – 48 pages or 64 pages, and the period of validity – 5 years or 10 years. Upon submission of the form, applicants receive a printed application summary and an appointment letter required for an in-person visit.
Step 2: Gather the necessary documentation
Applicants must have all required documents prepared before attending the appointment. Common elements of these are:
- National Identity Card (NID)/Birth Registration Certificate (BR)
- Current passport (for renewal)
- Proof of address (if applicable)
- Appointment letter and schedule of appointment, and summary of online application
Check the document requirements twice, as some documents might be requested depending on age, profession or special circumstances.
Step 3: Pay the Applicable Fee
Applicants may elect to have the delivery made via Regular, Express or Super Express. Super Express is only valid for applications received from within Bangladesh.
For a 48-page, 5-year passport, the rates of E-Passport for the citizens living in Bangladesh now, including 15% VAT, are as follows: Regular Delivery TK 4,025, Express Delivery TK 6,325, Super Express Delivery TK 8,625. Fees for 48 pages, 10-year passports are Tk 5,750 for Regular, Tk 8,050 for Express and Tk 10,350 for Super Express.
Payment Online: You can make a payment via the eKPay portal. VISA, Mastercard, bKash, Nagad, Rocket and many bank options are available. Payments can be made offline through A-Challan at the authorised banks like Sonali Bank, BRAC Bank, EBL and DBBL.
Step 4: Enrollment of Biometrics
The applicants are required to report to the designated Passport Office on the scheduled date. Fingerprints, photographs and signatures are taken during the appointment for biometric verification by officials. This step is mandatory and usually takes a short time if all documents are in order.

Step 5: Track Your Application and Get the Passport
After the biometrics submission, applicants can check their application status online through the DIP portal. The processing duration will differ based on the delivery type: Regular delivery is approximately 15 working days, Express delivery is approximately 7 working days, and Super Express delivery is a mere 2 working days.
If police verification is needed, the overall processing time may be 4 to 6 weeks, regardless of the delivery option selected. After approval, the passport can be collected from the passport office designated or sent via courier arrangements available after printing.
How to shorten the approval process
To avoid delays, make sure all the information you give matches the official records, upload clear scans of the documents and arrive on time for your appointments. Long processing times are usually due to data mismatches between application details and official records. Double-checking spellings of names, date of birth and NID details before submission can save a lot of time.
