Why Are LPG Prices Increasing?

1. Disrupted LPG Supply in the Middle East

Tensions in the Middle East, and particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, have been causing a disruption in LPG shipping routes.

2. Rising LPG Import and Shipping Costs

The Saudi Contract Price (CP) for propane and butane has averaged $782.50 per tonne, which is significantly above prices in previous months. Additionally, shipping premiums and insurance rates have risen dramatically.

As a result of these two combined factors, LPG imports have become more expensive, and authorities have had to raise retail prices to reflect this.

3. Currency Devaluation

As the Bangladeshi taka has depreciated against the US dollar, nearing Tk 123, import costs have also been increasing. Because LPG is globally priced in US dollars, any currency fluctuation will cause there to be a direct impact on local LPG prices.

This latest price increase was greatly impacted by the currency pressure being exerted on importers.

Strict Warning for Retailers

As of April 19, 2026, the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission has mandated that retailers cannot charge more thanTk 1,940 for a 12kg gas cylinder. Therefore, district administrations must monitor their respective markets.

Any violation of this mandate will result in severe penalties for those who violate the mandate. Therefore, consumers are encouraged to report anyone who is overcharging for their cylinders to the appropriate authorities.

Relief: Government-supplied LPG is Still Cheaper

The 12.5kg government-supplied gas cylinder still costs Tk 776.93, which is significantly cheaper than the new price of Tk 1,940. Those households that are low-income and rely on government-subsidised fuel may get some relief from this increase. However, government-supported cylinders can be very difficult to find in many areas.

Conclusion

The Tk 1,940 price for a 12 kg cylinder of LPG per unit will continue to reflect the increasing global pressures that are being placed on the energy of Bangladesh. The increase in price will give LPG retailers guaranteed pricing; however, this has worsened the cost of living for homes and businesses.

Consumers are to be aware of retail selling prices of official LPG and not pay too much, especially during this current rise in energy prices.
