Has there ever been a Smart Meter Refund? Many electricity consumers throughout Bangladesh are confused over whether or not there was a “smart meter refund” credited to accounts today. The short of it is that no such refund was announced by the authorities nationwide for May 2, 2026. Still, the recent changes in prepaid meter policy cause many users to think they’ve received refunds when, in fact, what they are seeing are adjustments occurring in their accounts.

What Changed Recently

With the recent policy change, the government no longer charges a monthly meter rental fee for prepaid meters. Previously, users would have had their meters charged a monthly meter rental fee of about BDT 40, which would generally get deducted each time the user added a new prepaid amount to their account. The elimination of this fee may generate small account credits for certain users and/or reduced deductions from future prepaid transaction amounts, as long as the companies making the changes continue to do so. In some cases, prior charges may also be adjusted depending on the company. The changes represent an adjustment in the way these companies charge customers – not a recurring refund campaign but rather an ongoing savings opportunity issued to consumers.

Why You Might See a “Credit”

If you’ve got a prepaid smart meter via Bangladesh Power Development Board or Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited, here’s what you’ll see on your recharge history:

  • Reduction in your previous deduction amount.
  • Adjustment in small balances.
  • Modification of fixed components.

Though a user could presume these are refunds, they’re actually most likely to be associated with the discontinuation of rent.

To check your meter balance and credit:

  • Check directly via the meter. Most prepaid meters allow balances and deductions to be viewed using short codes inputted as part of the keypad.
  • Visit either the BPDB or DPDC prepaid online portal.
  • Register to use the DESCO smart prepaid online services if you currently do not.

Utilise the BD prepaid meter application for balance, recharge history, and usage information in real-time.

These services provide clear documentation of any account credit or adjustment provided as a result of the use of the meter.
