The Chinese Visa Application Service Centre located in Dhaka will be temporarily closed from 1st to 5th May 2026 due to International Workers Day – a public holiday period observed in Bangladesh. The visa application centre will close for five days, during which time there will be no visa application submissions, no awarding of visas, and no issuing of passports to persons who have submitted their applications at the centre for those five days. There will therefore be a five-day gap in the operation of the visa processing system during a very crucial time for travellers applying for visas to enter China.

Why There Is More Value In This Closure Than It May Seem

A five-day suspension of operations may not seem unusually long; however, the closure occurs during the early parts of May, which is typically a high volume of travel, as many Travellers coming to China for either trade shows or meetings and factory visits are travelling during the months preceding the end of the school year. Any applicant who has not yet submitted their application before the end of April will now be delayed in processing their visa application without any hope of receiving their visa prior to travelling to China. Any applicant who has submitted their application prior to the April 30 deadline will also be delayed in processing their visa application because of the backlog that will occur after the resumption of operations.

Immediate Impact on Flight Plans

For those planning to travel to China, this situation can quickly become anxiety-inducing. If you do not have the physical stamped visa and passport in hand, you cannot board the international flight. There are a number of flights from Dhaka to Guangzhou, which are very popular with business travellers that may be cancelled at the last minute, or have their schedules changed. Many airlines are providing flexibility; however, not all airlines offer fully refundable bookings, which adds financial strain to the passenger.

What You Should Do If You’re Affected

Be proactive if your travel is scheduled to take place around the time of the closure. Here are some steps to take:

  • Keep checking the status of your visa applications.
  • Use your airline to help find alternatives for rescheduling.
  • Make sure to have all documents available before the office reopens to avoid additional delays.
  • Avoid tight travel schedules around holidays; and

Final Thoughts

Even though this closure is routine, it is not without its repercussions. The temporary “visa jam” shows that even a few minutes of downtime at a government agency can disrupt travel, businesses and planning. If you have a single piece of advice to take away from this, it is that you should always build buffer time into your visa applications. A small delay during the holidays can create a much larger problem later.

Summary:
A 5-day shutdown of the Chinese Visa Centre in Dhaka may delay visas and disrupt travel and business plans. Here’s what you need to know.
