Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated a doctors’ rally on Saturday morning marking the 37th founding anniversary of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh, drawing medical professionals from across the country to the LD Hall of the Jatiya Sangsad complex in Dhaka.
A Ceremonial Start to the Day
Before the rally began, the prime minister planted a neem sapling on the parliament premises, joined by his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman, who planted her own sapling nearby. The programme opened with the national anthem and the hoisting of the national and party flags, followed by the release of pigeons as a symbol of peace. DAB President Professor Dr Harun Al Rashid presided over the gathering, with BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain, and DAB Secretary General Dr Md Zahirul Islam Shakil among those in attendance.

Addressing the rally, Tarique Rahman spoke about the balance professionals should strike between political engagement and their responsibilities to patients. He said professionals in every democratic country tend to hold their own political views, but stressed that such involvement should never come at the cost of professional duty, a comment aimed broadly at teachers and doctors alike as much as it was at the doctors gathered before him.

The prime minister also used the occasion to address concerns beyond healthcare, saying that groups who benefited from the previous era of what he described as fascism remained active within the state and were working to destabilise the country’s power and energy sector. He said these groups were spreading misleading information to create confusion around ongoing efforts in the sector, without naming specific individuals or organisations.
