An alert has been issued for the weather in Bangladesh as severe climate conditions will soon develop in many areas of the country. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department reports that many districts (at least 17 in total) will see strong winds and thunderstorms, and also experience heavy rainfall over the next 24-48 hours. Being that the pre-monsoon season’s Kalboishakhi thunderstorms have formed in this manner, it appears conditions are more active than they normally are.

The Weather Warning is in effect for many divisions in Bangladesh

Dhaka; Khulna; Barishal; Chattogram; Sylhet; Rajshahi; Rangpur; Mymensingh. Each of these divisions will experience localised areas of potential weather changes, including lots of rain and damaging high winds.

There is a forecast for winds of 60-80 kph in the areas, with the heaviest winds during thunderstorms; also, there are light to moderate amounts of rain in many areas, and some will get heavy rain. There are many areas that will be experiencing lightning, which creates a high risk. River ports have been warned to fly a ‘caution’ Banner for wind and rain at this time related to river transport.

Kalboishakhi storms develop very rapidly and can be of a severe nature in a matter of minutes. There are three main risks to an individual due to these types of storms:

1) Strong winds (sudden and severe) that may break or uproot trees and other structures/objects such as canopies or awnings at your business, etc.

2) Lightning strikes (these are responsible for the largest number of deaths caused by the weather).

3) Localised flooding due to the rapid accumulation of rain.

As evidenced in the recent instances of these storms, the storms can be very unpredictable and highly dangerous.

Check Advisory for Your City

If you live in or near major city areas (such as Dhaka, Chattogram), you will need to keep up to date with what is going on locally.

You can view real-time forecasts/warnings by checking the BMD official channels and local news updates; also note that conditions can change dramatically even if you are in the same division but in a different locality.

  • Safety Rules You Will Need To Adhere To
  • Stay in your home during thunderstorms and avoid all non-essential travel.
  • Do not stand under trees or near electric lines during lightning activity.
  • Make sure that any loose items on roofs and balconies are tied down.
  • Avoid using river travel unless it is absolutely necessary.

Keep your emergency contacts and any devices that you have with you, fully charged.
