DHAKA: Bangladesh’s cultural community is in mourning after the death of celebrated theatre personality Ataur Rahman who died in Dhaka at the age of 84. The veteran actor, director and playwright is said to have died shortly after midnight while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital.

Ataur Rahman, a pioneer of the post-independence theatre movement in Bangladesh, has left a legacy that has influenced generations of actors, directors and stage performers across the country.

When Is The Funeral?

Family members and cultural organizers were still working out the funeral schedule Tuesday morning. Cultural reps were discussing public homage and burial arrangements.

Reports also said it was the late actor’s last wish to be paid tribute at Dhaka’s Central Shaheed Minar before the funeral prayers. The organisers were said to be applying for official permission to hold the public farewell ceremony there.
