Anik Dutta Death Mystery

Anik Dutta, the Bengali filmmaker behind the cult classic Bhooter Bhabishyat, died on May 27, 2026, at the age of 65. The news has created ripples in the Tollywood film industry and triggered a wave of grief-laced with deep confusion online. Dutta, who turned 65 on May 22, five days before the tragedy, died hours after suffering fatal injuries after falling from the sixth-floor rooftop of his apartment building in Hindustan Park, Gariahat, Kolkata.

What We Know So Far About The Incident

Dutta had fallen off the terrace of his Gariahat residence at around noon on May 27, 2026. Witnesses and police reports said he fell in a big pool of blood. He was rushed to Dhakuria Manipal Hospital in critical condition, where doctors later declared him dead due to severe trauma. Sources close to Dutta said that he had been living all alone in his flat for the last few months. He has a daughter living in Mumbai. He was estranged from his partner, Sandhi Dutta.

Fans and colleagues have been shocked by the sudden and violent death, and it has led to wild speculation online.

Defeating Serious Depression and Poor Health

Dutta was suffering from severe, deep-seated clinical depression for several weeks before his death, sources close to the filmmaker confirmed. He had a long history of COPD and respiratory problems, which culminated in a significant admission in January 2023. During the release of what was to be his final completed film, Joto Kando Kolkatatei, he had ominously told close associates he felt it might be his last film.

The unfinished legacy: The Aparajito 2

Anik Dutta was busy working on Aparajito 2, the long-awaited sequel to his critically acclaimed 2022 tribute to Satyajit Ray, when he tragically passed away. His death means the project will be forever left incomplete, and it leaves a gaping hole in Bengali cinema. Fans ponder just how much of the script or pre-production was achieved.

Dutta’s uncompromising, staunchly left-leaning intellectualism has inevitably fueled political conspiracy theories around his death. He was one of the most vocal critics of the Mamata Banerjee government in power and had famously spoken against the rampant commercialisation and usage of the posters of the Chief Minister at the Kolkata International Film Festival. In columns, he’d expressed fears of state-sponsored harassment. What caused the fall from the roof is not clear,r and the publicise divided in their opinion; some think it was a tragic accident, others a suicide brought on by severe depression and others suspect something more sinister.

Remembering Dutta: Major works that shaped his career

Anik Dutta was a filmmaker of razor-sharp wit, great intellectual depth and masterly social satire.

Bhooter Bhabishyat (2012): His first directorial changed the face of modern Bengali cinema forever. A terrific supernatural comedy, it used ghosts as a proxy to deliver blistering satire on real estate scams and political corruption, earning him the Best Director award at Anandalok Awards.

Ashchorjyo Prodeep (2013): A dark satire on unchecked greed and decay of the middle-class, with a consumerist bent, with the trope of the modern-day magic lamp

Bhobishyoter Bhoot (2019) is a full-blown political satire, satirising the upper strata of the state government. The film was instantly and illegally de facto banned and pulled from cinemas within 24 hours. This resulted in a landmark Supreme Court verdict in favour of free speech and a penalty of ₹20 lakh on the West Bengal government.

Borunbabur Bondhu (2020): A touching story of a principled old man alienated by a frivolous society. Winner of Filmfare Award East for Best Direction.

Aparajito (2022) A masterclass of the gruelling journey that Satyajit Ray took to make Pather Panchali. It had a screening at the Toronto International Film Festival and won Best Director at the WBFJA Awards 2023, but it notoriously faced booking rejections from state-run theatres in Kolkata due to Dutta’s political stances.

Joto Kando Kolkatatei (2025): The heritage and history adventure film released on Durga Pujo has been a crowd puller, and this was his last complete directorial sign-off.
