DHAKA: An employee of a Russian plague research institute in Irkutsk (Siberia) has died of a suspected pneumonic plague infection, regional officials said. Media reports say nearly 200 people in Irkutsk have been placed under quarantine and medical observation as a precaution.

Local media named the woman as 28-year-old laboratory technician Darya Shipilova. Russia’s consumer watchdog, Rospotrebnadzor, described the illness as “pneumonia of unknown aetiology” and said tests found no microorganisms linked to her work. Media reports say nearly 200 people have been placed under medical observation.
