MIRPUR, October 29, 2026. Bangladesh wasted a good position on the second day of the first Test against West Indies. They resumed on 213 for three but lost their last seven wickets for 59 to be bowled out for 272.
A Solid Platform From Day One
The hosts started confidently on a curtailed opening day. Play was stopped early due to bad light when Bangladesh were 213 for three in 74 overs, with opener Shadman Islam unbeaten on 99. West Indies struck early and Tanzid Hasan, Mominul Haque and Najmul Hossain Shanto all fell to leave the innings in trouble before Shadman steadied the ship.
Warrican Kicks Off Slide
Thursday morning session changed everything. Left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican sparked the collapse, taking five for 53. Debutant Joshua Bishop took two wickets as did Shamar Joseph. Shadman reached his century, his third in Tests, but was dismissed by Bishop who claimed his first Test wicket with the dismissal.
The lower order offered no resistance. A full toss from Warrican ripped through Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s stumps and Nayeem Hasan, Hasan Mahmud, Taijul Islam and Shoriful Islam all went cheaply. Bangladesh were bowled out for 19 runs losing five wickets in the process, Cricinfo’s report noted.
Litton Das Injury Adds To The Worry Litton Das was unbeaten on 34 but the hosts had more to worry about on the day. He was nursing a contusion on his right elbow which ruled him out of wicketkeeping duties and Jaker Ali Anik took the gloves. There’s no word yet on how serious the injury is or how long he might be out.
West Indies Innings
After lunch the West Indies began their reply on a surface that looked benign for the batsman. After 14.2 overs they were 50 for one, 222 runs behind. That’ll give plenty to do for Bangladesh’s bowlers, and batting order questions to answer.
What it stands for
The collapse is in keeping with a long-standing trend for Bangladesh, who have often converted strong positions into disappointing scores. In June they lost seven wickets for 27 runs against Zimbabwe in Harare, when they were 113 for three. The Mirpur Test is part of the World Test Championship cycle, while the second Test begins in Sylhet on November 5.
