Fans of Korean dramas in Bangladesh have a reason to celebrate as the massively popular series Descendants of the Sun will be broadcast in Bangla on the streaming site Toffee beginning May 1. This initiative is part of a new project by production company Views & Visions to make the beloved K-drama more accessible to its Bangla-speaking audience.
Khalid Hossain Avi is the director and a number of popular Bangladeshi actors who lent their voices to the main characters of the project. The main voice cast consists of Irfan Sajjad, Shamin Zoha Shoshi, Rafiath Rashid Mithila, ABM Sumon, Shyamal Mawla and Arik Anam Khan. Avi also noted that the castings considered more than likeness of the voices used but rather compared and contrasted the personalities of the voice actors to the personalities of the characters, so the emotional element was preserved.
‘Descendants of the Sun’ centers on the story of Captain Yoo Si-jin (Song Joong-ki), leader of an elite team in South Korea’s Alpha Team and Dr. Kang Mo-yeon (Song Hye-kyo), a principled and naive doctor. Their paths cross in Seoul but never intersect due to the nature of their respective jobs, one taking advantage of the opportunity to save lives even by sacrificing his own, while the other saving lives through her essential medical vocation. Their fate reunites them when they both find themselves on the edge of an imaginary warzone, specifically the fictional Uruk through love, sacrifice and responsibility in a backdrop of disaster, destruction and real conflict.
The Bangla version seeks to represent the essence of the original series while being more relatable to the local audience. The production team focused on keeping the rooted emotional aspects and basic culture in the new version to deliver a captivating experience for viewers.
Viewers will be able to stream the Bangla version of ‘Descendants of the Sun’, starting May 1, 2025 on Toffee.
