Bangladesh has renewed its objection to political activities being carried out from Indian soil, warning that they damage the relationship between the two neighbours. The latest remarks came on 5 October, when a senior Bangladeshi foreign affairs official said India should restrain former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and similar groups, while describing the wider conversation with New Delhi as positive.
What Dhaka Is Objecting To
The core complaint is simple. Dhaka believes ousted leaders should not be able to make political statements from India that could create instability in Bangladesh. Before Hasina’s reported 5 August programme, Dhaka told India it expects cooperation to ensure no one, including Hasina, uses Indian territory for such activities.
The 5 August Address in New Delhi
The warning did not stop the event. Hasina spoke through an audio link at a press club in New Delhi, and said she would return to Bangladesh regardless of the consequences. Bangladesh’s foreign ministry called the event an affront to its sovereignty and an insult to those killed in the July uprising.
How India Has Responded
India has kept some distance from the controversy. The Ministry of External Affairs said the government had no connection with the event and does not endorse anything said at the forum. On 4 October, India’s High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi said nobody can give a time frame for Hasina’s return, since Dhaka’s extradition request is still going through a legal process.
The Extradition Question
Extradition remains the biggest sticking point. Both the interim government and the BNP-led government elected in February have asked New Delhi to extradite Hasina, while India says it is still examining the matter. Bangladesh has also tried her in absentia, and it says the 2013 extradition treaty makes returning her an obligation.

Impact on Diplomatic Plans
The dispute is affecting the wider relationship. Dhaka has said Hasina’s virtual interaction affected the process around Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s proposed visit to India. This comes after a more hopeful phase, since Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman visited India in April on what Dhaka called a goodwill trip to build a new relationship.
What Happens Next
Both sides say they want good ties, but they define the problem differently. Dhaka sees political statements from Indian soil as a direct challenge to its stability, while India treats them as private events and points to legal process on extradition. Unless New Delhi gives clearer assurances, or moves forward on the extradition request, this issue is likely to keep returning and could slow cooperation on trade, security and connectivity.
