Democrats have won control of both chambers of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections. The result changes the political balance in Washington for the last two years of Donald Trump’s term.
What the Results Show
The Associated Press reported that Democrats won the Senate and the House, calling it a decisive rebuke of Republican governance. Counting was still under way on Wednesday, so final numbers may change.
- Senate: Democrats held 54 seats to Republicans’ 44, per the AP tally, with a few races uncalled. NBC News reported that Democrats flipped at least seven seats, including Kansas, Iowa, Texas, Ohio, Maine, North Carolina and South Carolina.
- House: Democrats had won 228 seats and led in 34 more, per the AP tally cited by Al Jazeera. That could take them above 260 seats, their largest total since 1990.
Why Voters Turned Against the Republicans
AP said voters were frustrated by high prices, the war in Iran and concerns about government corruption. CBS News reported that Trump’s approval rating was 38% and that 89% of voters called the cost of living a major or crucial factor.
How Republicans Responded
Vice President JD Vance blamed the Iran war for the party’s losses, according to NBC News. AP reported that Trump said Democrats “did a good job” and blamed Republican candidates for the losses.
What Changes in Washington
AP said Democratic control of the Senate will likely hamstring Trump’s ability to push his agenda, including his hopes for a conservative shift on the Supreme Court. NBC reported that Democrats will have leverage on healthcare, including restoring the enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies and reversing Medicaid cuts. Republicans note that midterm losses are common for the president’s party.
