This year has become one of the wonderful years for the Bangladeshi film industry because it is traveling across the borders and the global audience are also welcoming the creative minds hailing from the culturally rich country. It is a notable milestone created by the Bangladeshi filmmaker Adnan Al Rajeev whose short film ‘Ali’ was selected for the premiere at Cannes 2025.
Following that it premiered on 22 May 2025 and the short film received the Award of Special Jury Mention among the eleven films that were selected under this category. This short film is crafted around strong themes like passion, resilience, societal norms and self-discovery.
“My lifelong dream was to one day have my work featured on the official social media page of Festival de Cannes. That dream came true today. My heart trembles with fear, but it still feels good. My name will be there, our name will be there, my country’s name will be there” said Adanan Al Rajeev, director of ‘Ali’ who expressed his surreal moment after his short film got selected in Cannes.
It is the first ever recognition for a Bangladeshi short film at the Cannes Film Festival. Along with Adnan’s ‘Ali’ the Palme D’or was presented to “I’m Glad You’re Dead Now” directed by Tawfeek Barhom.
