Halal Export Certificate

Bangladesh exports food products, processed goods, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals to dozens of countries, and in an increasing number of those markets, especially across the Middle East, Malaysia, Indonesia and parts of Africa, a halal certificate is not a nice-to-have label but a mandatory import requirement. Without it, your shipment could be stopped at customs, or simply refused, or returned at your expense. If you are a business looking to export to any Halal-sensitive market, here is a simple guide to get certified through the right official channel in Bangladesh.

Who is the Issuer of Halal Certificates in Bangladesh?

In Bangladesh, the Islamic Foundation Bangladesh (IFB), under the Ministry of Religious Affairs, issues certificates of halal for export. The IFB is the government’s official halal certification authority, and its certificate is the document accepted by foreign customs authorities and halal standard bodies in the key export markets targeted by the Bangladeshi exporters.

It is worth noting that a number of private organisations in Bangladesh also offer halal certification, but only the IFB-issued certificate has the regulatory recognition needed to clear customs without challenge, for export purposes, especially to Gulf Cooperation Council countries and Malaysia. Before applying, always check with your importer which certifying body is accepted in their country.

Documents Needed for Application

The best way to avoid delays is to get the list of documents correct before you apply. Exporters seeking a halal certificate from the Islamic Foundation have to submit the following: a filled-up application form, which can be downloaded from the IFB office or its website; a copy of the company’s valid trade licence and TIN certificate; a product list mentioning item-wise details to be covered under the certificate with details of ingredient and the source; the food safety or BSTI certification of the factory wherever applicable; and a copy of the export LC or purchase order mentioning the destination market.

A lab test report showing that the food and beverage products do not contain prohibited substances (including pork derivatives, alcohol and non-halal animal-based additives) is required as well. Separate documentation of the source and method of slaughter is required for any animal-derived ingredients.

Fees and processing time now

The fee for halal certification at the Islamic Foundation is determined by the product category and the number of items included in a single certificate. The basic application fee for a single product category will be Tk 5,000 from 2026, with additional fees for each product line beyond the first. Factory inspection charges are compulsory for the first-time applicant or when renewing after a gap in registration. Charges are imposed separately based on the scale of the facility.

Standard processing time is 15 to 30 working days after we receive a complete, accepted application. Currently, there is no guaranteed fast-track option for standard commercial exporters. Exporters with urgent shipment deadlines should plan ahead for this timeline in their export planning.

Application Process Step by Step

A practical process to follow from start to certificate in hand:

•Confirm with your foreign buyer which body in your country’s customs authority will recognise as a halal certification

•Please gather all the required documents, such as the trade licence, details of product ingredients and laboratory test reports, before visiting IFB

•Send the filled-in application form and pay the applicable fee at the head office of the Islamic Foundation Bangladesh in Dhaka or your nearest regional IFB office

•Arrange and complete the factory inspection, if needed, and collect your certificate during the usual 15 to 30 working day timeframe

Summary

Getting a halal export certificate in Bangladesh is an attainable task, but only if you’re prepared properly. Internationally recognised halal certification is the right authority for the Islamic Foundation of Bangladesh. Your documents are in order, product ingredients are well documented & you have allowed enough time before your shipment date. We will ensure smooth processing of the application. For any business serious about accessing the global halal market, which is worth trillions of dollars every year, treating halal certification as a core part of export planning, rather than an afterthought, is the only approach that makes commercial sense.
