Bangladesh energy efficiency has become a source of energy security and economic resiliency strategy of the country. Within the last decade, the concentrated policies, reform of the regulatory landscape, and market-driven activities have been very effective in decreasing energy waste and diminishing import reliance. As global fuel prices are increasing and supply is uncertain, the issue of Bangladesh energy efficiency is no longer an option, it is a strategic imperative. Recent statistics depict steady improvement in efficiency per year, which puts the country on the path of realizing its national goals earlier. Enhancing affordability, sustainability, and stability of energy systems in the long term can be further enhanced by Bangladesh energy efficiency by giving it a higher priority towards households, industries and buildings.

Bangladesh’s Progress on Energy Efficiency

The situation with Bangladesh energy efficiency has been improving since the adoption of a national energy efficiency master plan in 2016. The efficiency has increased by 13.64 between FY2014-15 and FY2023-24 equivalent to 1.52 gains on an annual basis. In the case of FY202324, enhanced Bangladesh energy efficiency prevented close to 7 million tonnes of oil equivalent of fossil fuel consumption, which saves the cost of importation by over USD 3.3 billion.

The early gains were soon followed by slowed progress, but were regained around FY202021 as the global fuel price volatility and increased tariffs put efficiency on the policy and consumer behaviour agenda.

Targets Likely to Be Achieved Ahead of Time

With the existing rate, Bangladesh energy efficiency targets of 2030 will probably be achieved one year ahead of time. The new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3.0) also established a target of 19.2% improvement by 2035, which it can be assumed that Bangladesh is in a good position to achieve earlier than the deadline. These estimates underscore the usefulness of regulatory practices and concentrated effort through the national institutions.

Why Households and Industry Matter Most

The major part of energy consumption in Bangladesh is in household and industries, where it contributes about two-thirds of the total energy consumption. At the domestic level, the standard of appliances and clear energy efficiency labels can hasten the implementation of efficient refrigerators, air-conditioners and lighting. In the industry, refurbishing motors, motorized systems, captive power generation, and the replacement of gas boilers by electric ones can provide significant saving.

The commercial buildings are also important especially as the cooling demand increases. Electricity consumption can be saved greatly by passive design, insulation, and effective cooling systems.

Strengthening Policy and Financing Support

The Bangladesh energy efficiency development has also been facilitated by a solid regulatory foundation that has been established by the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA). In the future, there will be need of awareness programmes, tougher standards and labelling, rationalised import duties on efficient components and easier availability of the low-cost finance. There is additional adoption through collaboration with the banks, multilateral lenders, and the potential establishment of a super Energy Service Company (ESCO).

A Strategic Imperative for Bangladesh

In addition to its effect of reducing bills, Bangladesh energy efficiency also brings immunity against world prices of energy and supply shocks. It makes industries more competitive, more energy secure and contributes to the growth of the economy in the long term. Integration of regulators, consumers, financiers, and technology providers will also guarantee a sustained delivery of national benefits by Bangladesh energy efficiency.
