Bangladesh’s Interim Government Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has broken silence on the deadly Pahalgam attack and the following Operation Sindoor that happened between India and Pakistan over the last few weeks.
The Nobel Peace Prize Laureate through his social media post commented for the first time about the ongoing rift between his neighboring nations that created huge headlines and panic across the world. In a thoughtful X post, Yunus commended both Narendra Modi, PM of India and Shehbaz Sharif, PM of Pakistan and US President for the Ceasefire agreement.
Muhammed Yunus’ X post read, “I most sincerely commend Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi of India and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan for agreeing to a ceasefire with immediate effect and to engage in talks. I would also like to express my deep appreciation to President Trump and Secretary of State Rubio for their effective mediation.”
Why did Bangladesh Stay Silent?
During the Pahalgam attack and ‘Operation Sindoor’, a calculated military attack that took down nine terrorist bases in Pakistan, Bangladesh remained silent and neither commented nor intervened between its neighboring countries’ conflict, amid Bangladesh stance against terrorism.
While the public have been pointing and tying Bangladesh’s silence as to not escalate or sever its relation with Pakistan after the fatal Pahalgam attack that took the lives of 26 civilians in India. While world leaders and diplomats have been lending support and offering to mediate, Bangladesh’s interim government has been having its plate full of inter polity distress.
Bangladesh Interim Government took a big decision of banning Ex- Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ‘Awami League’ party on Saturday. The political party will be banned under Anti – terrorism Law and stated, “The official gazette notification will be issued in this regard on the next working day.”
This also can be lined with internal political relief with Anti- India rhetoric often regulated within the Jamaat-e-Islami and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) could have ignited political distress, thus Yunus’ statement reflects stability.
