Bangladesh’s winter has thickened its grip with all the authentic signals of a deep freeze: temperatures dropping, dense fog setting in, and a cold wave that has become so persistent and so intense that it is disrupting daily life from the northern regions to the capital, Dhaka.

Cold Wave Grips the Nation

Bangladesh has been going through a significant temperature decrease; many places have been hitting their lowest mercury readings of the season as cold winds have been blowing all over the country. According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the minimum temperatures have fallen to the lower teens and even into single digits in parts of the north and northeast.

Major Cities Feel the Chill

•Dhaka: The capital city has seen its mercury dip to around 14.3 as cold winds and morning fog settle in, making winter mornings especially harsh for residents.

•Nikli (Kishoreganj): This upazila recorded the lowest national temperature at about 10 °C, repeatedly marking the coldest spot in recent days.

•Chuadanga: Temperatures plunged sharply to around 9.4°C, signalling a significant cold wave that grips the southwestern district.

•Tentulia (Panchagarh): The northern tip of Bangladesh saw temperatures as low as 8.9, the lowest of the season so far in parts of the north.

Fog and Daily Life Disruptions

Along with the cold, regions have been covered by moderate to dense fog, mostly in the north and the basins of rivers. The fog not only makes the cold more severe, but it also creates difficulties for air navigation, inland water transport, and road communication due to rare visibility in the early hours of the day.

Impact on Communities

The cold situation is not only uncomfortable, but it is also affecting people’s livelihoods. Vendors, outdoor workers, and farmers are getting less money as the people who buy their products stay indoors. In Nikli and Panchagarh, a good number of people are dressing themselves in warm layers, and local governments are handing out blankets and warm clothing to the needy.

What’s Next in the Forecast?

The cold wave might extend for a few more days, according to BMD’s weather experts. Slight temperature rises are expected around the beginning of January, and then another dip in early January might be possible. Foggy conditions are expected to stay for the next 2448 hours at least.

Final Chill Thoughts

From the icy plains up north through to the capital, Dhaka, the weather in Bangladesh has been sub-zero all across the country this winter. Everybody keeps talking about the quite pronounced temperature fall, which is accompanied by fog in the major districts. So people are mentally preparing themselves for more cold and foggy mornings as well as frigid nights when the cold season will be even deeper. To be safe and comfortable during the cold wave, keep abreast of weather conditions and wrap up warm.
