  • Rabindranath Tagore: Possibly the most famous writer from Bengal is renowned for his poetry, drama and plays. The Bengali polymath is also a versatile composer, playwright and philosopher. His Bengali roots and the major connection of penning both the Indian and Bangladeshi national anthem makes him a fluid icon in this list.
  • Amartya Sen: A prolific Economist and philosopher, Amartya Sen’s economic theories and his contribution in thoughtful and welfare economics gave him the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. Amartya Sen has roots in Dhaka, his paternal connection while his maternal connection binds him in India as well. 
  • Muhammad Yunus: A pioneer in modern microcredit and microfinance, Muhammad Yunus is the only Nobel Laureate in the list hailing completely from modern day Bangladesh. He is a key individual in devising Grameen Bank and providing microloans for the underprivileged without collateral. 
  • Abhijit Banerjee: Another brilliant Economist who recently shared the Nobel Prize for Economics for his contribution”for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.” Banerjee has his Bengali roots from his father, although he is known as an Indian – American.
