Ramzan in 2026 is expected to begin around 16–17 February and conclude around 17–18 March, subject to moon sighting. Umrah during Ramzan holds special spiritual importance in Islam, with many pilgrims choosing this period due to its increased religious rewards. As a result, Makkah experiences heavy crowds, making preparation essential. Here are the steps of Umrah, discussed below:
Making the Intention for Umrah
The first step in performing Umrah is making a sincere niyyah. The intention is formed in the heart and reflects the pilgrim’s purpose to perform Umrah solely for the sake of Allah. This intention is made before entering the state of Ihram.
Entering the State of Ihram
Ihram begins at designated Miqat points. Pilgrims perform ablution or ghusl, wear prescribed clothing, and recite the intention for Umrah. Men wear two unstitched white cloths, while women wear modest attire. From this moment, specific restrictions apply.
Reciting the Talbiyah
After entering the Ihram, pilgrims recite the Talbiyah, declaring their submission to Allah. The recitation continues until reaching the Kaaba in Masjid al-Haram. This step symbolises spiritual readiness.
Performing Tawaf
Tawaf involves circling the Kaaba seven times in an anti-clockwise direction. Pilgrims begin from the Black Stone if possible. During Ramzan, Tawaf can take longer due to crowds, and patience is strongly advised.
Two Rakats of Prayer
After Tawaf, pilgrims perform two rakats near Maqam Ibrahim, or anywhere inside the mosque if the area is crowded. This prayer marks the completion of Tawaf.
Sa’i Between Safa and Marwah
Sa’i consists of walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah. This ritual commemorates the struggle of Hajra (AS) and is an essential part of Umrah.
Cutting or Shaving Hair
Men shave or trim their hair, while women cut a small portion. This act completes Umrah and ends the state of Ihram.
Crowd and Health Advisory for Ramzan 2026
Authorities often regulate entry during Ramzan due to large numbers. Pilgrims are advised to stay hydrated after iftar, rest adequately, and follow official instructions.
