Electricity prices in Bangladesh have increased steadily, leaving many households feeling the pain of these costs when the monthly bill arrives. But the good news is, you don’t have to spend money on some fancy gadget or technology to save energy. You can make a few adjustments to your habits and lifestyle, and be on your way to saving money by using less electricity, while, at the same time, becoming a friend to the environment.
Let’s take a look at some easy, Bangladesh-friendly tips for saving energy!
Switching to Energy-Efficient Lightbulbs
One of the easiest and most effective ways to save energy is by replacing your old lightbulbs with either LED or CFL lights. When properly maintained, LED bulbs can save you up to 80% on electricity costs and last longer than incandescent lightbulbs, making LED a smart investment.
It should also be a habit to switch off lights when you leave a room. In many Bangladeshi homes, lights are often reminant in hallways or balconies, not being used – while they may not seem like a money-saving measure, over time they are costly!
Utilize Fans and Air conditioning Efficiently
It’s impossible to imagine their absence in a tropical country like Bangladesh, particularly during extremely high temperatures in the summer season. Despite their fantastic cooling systems, fans and air conditioning units are generally the most energy-intensive devices in your home.
Keep the temperature setting on your AC at 25-27 degrees Celsius – every single degree increase in temperature will equate to higher cooling costs on your bill.
Have your AC filters cleaned and replaced at all times to maximise its energy efficiency and cooling services.
Wherever you can, use ceiling fans.
They are far less inefficient; additionally, their usage is relatively efficient in electricity consumption – an easy way to save.
Switching to energy-efficient ceiling fan systems can save consumers up to 40% on the cost of regular installations.
Unplug When Not In Use
Did you know that you may be using “phantom” energy? All your devices/chargers (TVs, microwaves, etc.) still use power energy when they’re switched off. All of this “standby” energy could be as high as 10% of your bill. Quite simply—just unplug or ask your family to unplug devices when not in use, especially where you sleep or intend on being gone for an extended period (i.e., at work or in town). It’s a simple habit and will help save.
Be Smart with Appliances
- Washing Machines: Wash a full load of laundry and use cold water when possible.
- Fridges: Don’t leave the door open for too long. Make sure you defrost your fridge regularly.
- Irons: Iron clothing in batches rather than one at a time.
- Rice Cookers: Use the right amount of water to avoid wasting power.
Also, buy appliances with a five-star energy rating, if possible.
Use Natural Light and Ventilation
In Bangladesh, we have a lot of sunlight – so make full use of it! And during the day, keep your curtains open instead of needing to switch on electrical lighting.
Good ventilation will also let you lessen your need for an AC or fan during the cooler months.
If you live in your own home, you might consider installing solar panels. Solar may have some upfront cost, but the savings from your electric bills are worth it, and it helps the planet, too.
