NASA’s Artemis II mission represents mankind’s ambitious comeback to deep space. People living in Bangladesh can become a part of millions of others across the globe who will have the chance to follow along as Artemis II takes place in real-time. On April 1, Artemis II was launched from Kennedy Space Center carrying four astronauts aboard an Orion spacecraft on a ten-day loop trip around the Moon, marking humanity’s first crewed lunar flight since Apollo.

What is the Artemis II Mission?

Orion will be flown around the moon as part of Artemis II, taking along people. They will not land. The crew consists of Reid Wiseman as commander, Victor Glover as pilot, Christina Koch (US) and Jeremy Hansen (Canadian space agency) as mission specialists.

Gravity from the Earth and Moon will be used to send the spacecraft to and does not need mid-course engines, such as were used in Apollo 13, but will follow a free-return trajectory through the Earth/Moon system. Within approximately 10 days of launch, the spacecraft will test the life support, navigational, and re-entry systems for use in future landing missions to the Moon (before end of 2028).

The launch occurred on April 1, 2019, at 6:35 PM EDT (early morning BD on April 2) and lit up the night sky in Dhaka. Orion’s flyby of the Moon today, April 6, will be the closest at 248,000 miles from the surface of the Moon.

Real-Time Tracking with AROW Tool

The public can also immediately track the Orion spacecraft via the NASA Artemis Real-Time Orbit website (www.nasa.gov/trackartemis), which is available to anyone who wants to view the latest updates in real time. You may access the website for free using your mobile device or computer, including Android and iOS devices. (This service is particularly useful for Bangladesh’s 4G smartphones).

AROW shows:

  • Live 3D map of Earth-Moon path
  • Altitude, speed (up to 25,000 mph), distance from Earth/Moon
  • Mission elapsed time, velocity graphs

Data starts one minute after takeoff, from Orion sensors to Houston control. Expect a 40-minute communications blackout behind the Moon during the flyby. Video may be slow because of the distance.

Bangladeshis: Look for flyby pictures between 10 and 11 PM BDT. You can watch Netflix, YouTube, and the NASA site live with expert commentary.
