To renew its leadership, the National Citizen Party (NCP) has established a rule requiring convenors at the district and upazila levels to be at least 40 years old. This decision was adopted during the NCP  party’s third general meeting on Friday at its interim office in Banglamotor, Dhaka.

As part of reforming its organisational setup, NCP has suggested structural division of the country’s 64 districts into 19 zones. The district committee now has 31 to 51 members and upazila committees have 21 to 41 members. The moves aim at making it more efficient and bringing leadership into the party folds.

The meeting, presided over by NCP Convener Nahid Islam and coordinated by Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain also unveiled a protest plan to be held this week in Dhaka calling for prosecution of ruling Awami League for alleged genocide, demanding political reform and urge for a Constituent Assembly.

Along with national political matters, the NCP meeting expressed condemnation for the Israeli aggression in Gaza and expressed solidarity with those protesting the Waqf Bill in India. It also called upon the Bangladesh government to take strong measures to stop border killing, return stabilising price increases and provide economic relief for the people.

With reports on the misbehavior of certain members, the party is announcing a Discipline and Investigation Committee which will be inaugurated on Sunday. The party also issued a formal condolence for the death of NCP central organizer Khairul Kabir’s mother.

The decisions from the third general meeting were disclosed to the press in a statement signed by NCP’s Joint Member Secretary (Office) Saleh Uddin Sifat.
