Shahabuddin Park: The New Enlivening Offline Zone Flashing in a Hyperconnected World

Post the pandemic everything has been changed upside down which includes all the works and even our daily routine that are made more comfortable with the technologies predominantly. Since we are living in an era which is dominated by screens and digital dependency, people find the time hardly to spend or even to have a conversation within themselves. It majorly affects the social communication skills of the children. To break those digital encroachments, the government of Bangladesh took the initiative and re-opened the Shahabuddin Park in Dhaka in 2020. 

Striking Factors of Shahabuddin Park

  • This park underwent a major renovation under the Green Dhaka Campaign.
  • Shahabuddin Park was refurbished with the minimalist landscape idea designed by VITTI Sthapati Brindo Ltd
  • To promote the key progressive habits among the kids and young adults they have opened the garage named ‘Grow Your Reader’.
  • Any person can enter the garage and take their readings on their own, since they trust their people over the locks, registration or staff.
  • The entry for anyone is free but it is stated that the loudspeakers, banners will not be allowed to take it inside the park.
  • To poise the monsoon runoff, they utilise the filtered water that is running in the drainage and water-filtration.
  • Also, strict decibels will be followed under the ‘Noise-Limit Protocols’ in the amphitheatres.

Shahabuddin Park is beaming as a benchmark for the urban green spaces in South Asia for its thoughtful design which earned one of the prestigious awards ‘Berger Award for Excellence in Architecture’ in 2024. Frequently the park hosts diverse events which promote mental wellness, arts and public dialogue which makes Shahabuddin as a cultural Pulse Point. The park encountered criticism after the presence of a cafe which made the place look like a commercial spot. Later, both DNCC and the park managers resolved the problem by encouraging eco-friendly updates.
