The country now decided to replace the founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman statues across the nation with temples, the understanding of the presidents and the leadership changes align the years is needed. Here are the presidents of Bangladesh so far and the timeline of their tenure. 

List of Bangladesh Presidents so far

  • Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (April 11, 1971 – January 12, 1972, and again from January 25, 1975 – August 15, 1975). After introducing a new political system, Mujibur Rahman became the country’s first provisional government. 
  • Syed Nazrul Islam (Acting: April 17, 1971 – January 12, 1972) – Acting President during the war of independence. 
  • Justice Abu Sayeed Chowdhury (January 12, 1972 – December 24, 1973)  
  • Mohammad Mohammadullah (December 24, 1973 – January 25, 1975) – Mohammadullah assumed the position following Abu Sayeed Chowdhury’s resignation.
  • Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad (August 15, 1975 – November 6, 1975) – Mostaq Ahmad was the Commerce minister in the government and assumed the presidency after the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
  • 6. Justice Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem (November 6, 1975 – April 21, 1977) – Justice Sayem was appointed President and Chief Martial Law Administrator after the coup by Brigadier General Khaled Mosharraf.
  • 7. General Ziaur Rahman (April 21, 1977 – May 30, 1981) – Gen Ziaur Rahman assumed the presidency after Justice Abu Sadat resigned.
  • 8. Justice Abdus Sattar (November 27, 1981 – March 24, 1982) – Sattar was VP under Ziaur Rahman, who became Acting President after Zia’s assassination.  
  • Justice Ahsanuddin Chowdhury (March 27, 1982 – December 10, 1983) 
  • General Hossain Mohammad Ershad (December 11, 1983 – December 6, 1990) – Declared himself President in 1983; Forced to resign in 1990.
  • Shahabuddin Ahmed (As Acting President: December 6, 1990 – October 10, 1991; Elected President: October 10, 1996 – November 14, 2001)
  • Dr AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury (November 14, 2001 – June 21, 2002) – Elected by the BNP-led Four-Party Alliance government but had to resign after a dispute with the BNP.
  • Jamaluddin Ahmad (Acting: June 21, 2002 – September 6, 2002)
  • Prof Iajuddin Ahmed (September 6, 2002 – February 12, 2009)
  • Zillur Rahman (February 12, 2009 – March 20, 2013) – Elected under the Awami League government.
  • Abdul Hamid (April 24, 2013 – April 24, 2023) – Formally elected president by Parliament in 2013 and served two terms until 2023 after serving as acting president following Zillur Rahman’s death in March 2013. 
  • Mohammed Shahabuddin (April 24, 2023 – Present) – Unopposed elected in 2023 following Abdul Hamid’s retirement.
